Our aims

Welcome to Technology and Design

In Technology and Design pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and manufacture products that meet human needs. We aim to provide pupils with a broad range of current and traditional manufacturing techniques, working with a variety of materials to produce quality products across all the key stages. Technology and Design aims to stimulate and maintain pupil’s interest, enjoyment, curiosity and concerns about the technological world in which they live in. Pupils will develop their knowledge, understanding, skills and technical vocabulary through their work. We also encourage links outside the classroom to aid learning and prepare students for life beyond school.

Curriculum

Years 8, 9 & 10

Projects in each year are designed to cover specific key elements and skills. These projects develop each year and ensure progression in both designing and manufacturing. Health and Safety is also a main area of learning across all year groups. Assessment is weighted 50% practical and 50% written exam.

Areas of learning and skill development include; creative design, manufacture, materials, modelling, electronics, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM).

The projects made by each of the year groups are as follows:
Year 8

1. Electronic Picture – Pupils will use CAD software (V3 Design) to create a digital design for their electronic picture. This design will then be manufactured using a laser cutter (CAM), which will precisely cut and engrave the materials. Once the structure is complete, pupils will assemble an electronic circuit using various components, enabling their picture to light up.

2. CAD/CAM Keyring – Pupils will use CAD software (V3 Design) to create a custom key ring design. This design will then be manufactured using a laser cutter/3D Printer (CAM) for precise cutting and engraving. Afterward, pupils will use a variety of workshop machines to drill holes and apply finishing techniques, ensuring a high-quality final product.

Year 9

1. Electronic Toy Car - This project enables pupils to explore and apply a variety of practical techniques in an engaging, hands-on way. Using a vacuum former, they create a mould for their toy car, which is then refined using a range of machines. In addition, pupils design and assemble a working electrical circuit that includes a motor, ensuring their toy car functions effectively. Through this process, students gain valuable experience in product design, manufacturing, and basic electronics.

Year 10

1. Night Light - Pupils design and construct a night light using a combination of materials and modern manufacturing techniques. They begin by creating a wooden base, which provides a sturdy foundation for the light. An electronic circuit is then assembled to power the light source, introducing pupils to basic electronics. Using CAD software, they design a custom acrylic cover, which is then manufactured using CAM processes such as laser cutting or CNC routing. The final product is carefully assembled and finished to a high standard using appropriate tools and machinery, resulting in a functional and visually appealing night light.

GCSE Technology and Design (AQA)

The AQA qualification is modern and relevant, so students can learn about contemporary technologies, materials and processes, as well as established practices. Check out the specification below :

Examination

Year 11 consists of studying Section A. Core Technical Principles of the course. They will develop knowledge and understanding of:

Year 12 consists of studying Section B. Specialist Technical Principles. Pupils will develop knowledge and understanding of:

Pupils will have to pick one of these topics and prepare for more in depth responses during the examination.

Non – Exam Assessment (NEA)

This GCSE places emphasis on understanding and applying iterative design processes. Pupils will use their creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

GCSE Construction and the Built Enviornment (CCEA)

The GCSE Construction and Built Environment aims to develop a broad background knowledge and core knowledge of the construction industry. Pupils will apply their developing knowledge in relevant, enjoyable and work-related contexts for craft products and computer aided design (CAD) projects. This course will allow pupils to investigate opportunities to progress into further education, training or employment in the construction industry. Through construction pupils will develop and practise the key transferable skills that are important in working life and develop knowledge of the materials and sustainable methods used in domestic and commercial construction. The course is unitised, meaning students can complete parts of the assessment at different stages. It includes four main units:

Unit 1: Introduction to the Built Environment

Unit 2: Sustainable Construction

Unit 3: The Construction Craft Project

Unit 4: Computer-Aided Design (CAD) in Construction

Occupational Studies Construction

This is a practical, hands-on qualification designed for students at Level 1 and Level 2. It focuses on developing real-world skills and knowledge related to the construction industry, preparing learners for further education, training, or employment.

Key Features of the Construction Pathway:

- Practical Learning: Emphasises learning by doing, ideal for students who thrive in hands-on environments.

- Unit-Based Structure: Students complete two units from the construction area to achieve the qualification. Units include:

- CAD/CAM Integration: Some units may incorporate digital design and manufacturing techniques.

- Employability Focus: Builds transferable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and communication, all essential for the workplace.

- Progression Opportunities: Provides a foundation for moving into apprenticeships, further vocational training, or employment in the construction sector.

Occupational Studies Technology and Innovation

This is a practical, work-related qualification offered at Level 1 and Level 2. It is designed to give students hands-on experience and insight into careers and skills related to modern technology and creative industries.

The Technology and Innovation strand includes a variety of units that allow pupils to explore digital and technical skills. Units include:

A Level - Edexcel Design and Technology (Product Design)

During Year 13 and 14 we aim to develop a students knowledge, understanding, skills and application for designing products. Product design encompasses a wide range of design disciplines but is firmly rooted in the skills required to design and make high quality products. Products that are fit for purpose, satisfy wants and needs, enhance our day to day lives and, most importantly, give students the opportunity to demonstrate their design and technology capability.

Component 1 : Principles of Design and Technology

· Weighting : 50% of the qualification

· Assessment : Written Exam (2 hours 30 minutes, 120 marks)

· Content Includes:

· Question Types : Calculations, short-answer, and extended writing questions

Component 2 : Independent Design and Make Project

· Weighting : 50% of the qualification

· Assessment : Non-examined assessment (coursework)

· Focus : Creativity, problem-solving, and iterative design

BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment

This is a vocational qualification designed for post-16 learners who want to gain a solid foundation in the construction industry. It is equivalent to one A Level and is typically studied over two years alongside other qualifications.

The Extended Certificate includes 4 units, of which 3 are mandatory and 1 is optional :
