Our aims

The English Department at St Joseph’s is comprised of a team of highly experienced and dedicated specialists. We recognise that every student is entitled to our highest expectations, and this pupil-centred approach has yielded excellent results at both GCSE and A Level in recent years.

The English team at St Joseph’s runs various activities throughout the school year, from book clubs and ‘Readathons’, to theatre visits and poetry competitions. We like to encourage our students to experience English outside of the classroom, and our intention is to create a life-long appreciation of the English language in every pupil.

Curriculum

Being a core curriculum subject, every pupil in the school is required to study English. Pupils are taught in mixed-attainment groups at Key Stage 3, and are given the opportunity to develop their reading, writing, and speaking and listening skills through the study of both contemporary and classic works of fiction, exploration of media texts, and consideration of current affairs and non-fiction articles so that they are fully prepared for the demands of GCSE English.

Pupils follow the CCEA GCSE specification for English Language at Key Stage 4 and are also given the option of studying English Literature.

At A Level, students who choose to continue their studies in the subject also follow the CCEA specification for English Literature, where they have the chance to study some of the giants of Irish, English and American literature.

🙏 Year 13 Knock Pilgrimage 🙏

Today, our Year 13 students made their annual pilgrimage to Knock, taking some valuable time away from school life to pause, reflect and nurture their spirituality.

The students had the opportunity to come together in prayer and take part in Mass at Knock, creating a meaningful space for reflection, faith and community as they begin their journey through A Levels.

A sincere thank you to Fr Dermot for leading our pilgrimage and for helping make the day such a special and reflective experience for our students. 🙏
